The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has determined that rollover crash risks are greatly increased with 10 or more people riding in a 15 passenger van.  The van safety program aims to minimize this risk.

Regulation

The policy provides minimum safety requirements for driving 15 passenger vans owned, rented, or leased for use by Texas State faculty, staff, or students.

Planning a Trip?

Before departing with your 15 passenger van, please complete the Journey Management Plan to ensure your group and your van are ready to go.

Training Requirements

All 15 passenger van drivers must complete a two-part training course through EHSREM. The course must be repeated every 3 years and will need to be scheduled well in advance. Any costs will be borne by the driver's department. Each training session has a minimum number of 10 trainees and maximum of 20.

Note: If a department owns a van, we will use that van in question for the training. If a van is unavailable to use, then a rental may be needed.

Insurance

If borrowing a 15-pasenger van, the insurance must be reviewed to ensure Texas State University will be covered. Insurance information needs to be sent to EHSREM. Please allow up to 72 business hours for processing in advance of borrowing a 15-passenger van.
